Tetris
Some games come and go. Tetris doesn’t. Since 1984 Tetris has been around and it’s not going anywhere else. No, we’re not getting nostalgic here. Facts are stars are shining in the sky. Tetris is engraved into the brains of a generation; of several generations. Everyone knows Tetris.
When we say everyone… we mean everyone.
So this isn’t a gift collection for bored dads and retro gaming enthusiasts. This is for the person who still plays it on their phone at 3am. The one who had their Game Boy Tetris cartridge rubbed hollow from overuse. The person who will still try to beat your fucking high score even though they’re well into adulthood. That person is your coworker. That person is your boss. That person is your teenage niece. They exist everywhere, and they deserve better than some tube sock you can buy at the gas station gift shop.
So we only went picking through stuff we knew earns the Tetris brand. We didn’t want to give someone a ‘gift’ that was only Tetris because it said the word on the box. We wanted to find things that spoke to what makes Tetris so good. The shapes. The colors. That satisfyingly pure logic.
If something in this store doesn’t fit that aesthetic, you won’t find it here.
But it also helps that Tetris is one of those few games that are just as loved no matter what your age. Grandparents and grandchildren can both have Tetris as their favorite game and it won’t seem weird to either of them. It’s unique in that way. That’s why it works as a gift so well. As soon as something becomes ‘for babies’ or ‘for老人’, we shouldn’t have it.
That’s our bar for keeping stuff in the store. Would a cool kid enjoy this? Would someone’s nan grin like an idiot when they get this?
If it fits in that range, it belongs here. If not? Next.
