Buying someone a bottle seems easy until you’re in the aisle staring at shelves sweating blood trying to remember Burgundy or Bordeaux. White? Wait. Do they even LIKE white? DOES THE £15 BOTTLE YOU’RE LOOKING AT MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE YOU TRIED OR LIKE YOU PURCHASED IT ON THE WAY? We’ve been there, panicked and sweating. Trust us, it’s not pleasant.
So we built this with people like us in mind. People who want to gift wine properly. Each bottle here has been curated because it passes a threshold that most wine gifts don’t. It must be considered. It must be something the person on the receiving end actually notices. We don’t want it just opened then politely downed before Monday lunchtime.
That being said, we didn’t want to fall into the trap of buying expensive for the sake of it. Price doesn’t always equal quality. Some bottles here are expensive because they’re honestly worth it. Some are cheaper but no less valuable; odds are a beautifully selected £20 bottle from a small vineyard will have a better back-story than that £50 bottle everyone can find. Stories are important. Wine is one of those gifts that the reasoning behind the bottle hits just as hard as what’s inside it.
And finally, we didn’t want this to just be about bottles. Some of the best things to gift alongside wine are the things that make it better to drink. A nice opener. A bloody good decanter. Even a voucher for an experience that’ll help them learn about what they love to drink. They’ll remember that kind of gift longer than a bottle will last.
