Goddaughter
It’s a unique relationship in that most gift giving categories are not. She’s not just another child that you know. She’s yours. Yours in the sense that you were chosen, you promised over God/buddha/the forces of the universe depending on your comfort with swearing to take care of her. So while the gift doesn’t need to be broke YOU bank by any means, it should reflect some of that. It should mean something, without trying too hard. A bath bomb set will not do. Neither will white elephant gift fodder that her parents will receive smiles over because it’s clearly intended for someone twice her age.
We curated this edit specifically because we noticed the goddaughter is often overlooked by retail. Too precious for the kids market filler and way too young for any of the jewellery you’d consider for an adult woman you love. And goddaughters often come with occasion. Christenings. Birthdays with gift-giving baked in. Exchanging something with the girl is often a tiny formalisation of the relationship itself. Which means whatever you give will probably be remembered. Not always consciously. But you will look at it and remember.
All of these gifts have been considered with that relationship at their core. With the fact that you care enough about getting it right for her. And that, being her godparent means something to you. It’s a responsibility that people take on seriously even if they don’t quite know what they’re supposed to do with it most of the time. And if throwing a party or leading goddaughter-orientated discussions about faith/spirituality/general life lessons aren’t your thing. An excellent gift is one of the ways that role comes with tangible expression in real life.
There is something for goddaughters of all ages in this edit because goddaughters grow up. Some of these gifts are cute enough for a babe in arms at their font. Some of it will appeal to girls with very strong opinions about most of the subjects you try to talk them about. Some of it will resonate with teenagers who didn’t ask for a godparent and who may still wonder what they’re supposed to do with you onistle, politely sending that question packing with an awesome gift. That’s exactly what we were thinking about when we put this together.
We’ve stayed away from the ‘sticknameonthespoon’ type gifts. Sure they’re personalised but a godparent-Goddaughter relationship already is personal. We kept things that we would genuinely give ourselves. Items that have something special about them. Something that feels considered. Because a goddaughter isn’t just another OF for whom you buy a gift because it’s someone’s birthday. If you took the time to find the perfect gift it shows you care about her. And that’s what it means to be her Godparent. Let the gift show that.
