Mother
Buying for your mum is stressful. Far more so than any other gift-giving occasion we can think of, you want this to feel considered. You want to skip past anything you’d find on a shelf by the till that ‘springs to mind’. You want her to know you’ve put some thought into it. But shop for anything mom-related and you’ll immediately know what we mean. Most stuff out there falls into a tiny band of bubble baths and pottery sets or novelty items heavy on sentiment but lighter on knowing her as a person.
So we built this gift guide. We didn’t think that was good enough.
We looked for gifts that would hit the mark. Gifts that don’t just recognise she’s your mum, but that recognise her as a person with particular tastes. Staying here meant being incredibly ruthless about what else we left out. Pretty much everything you’d find in your standard gift guide didn’t make the cut. If we weren’t sure that a real woman would smile when she received it, rather than tossing it aside because she already has four things exactly like it, then it didn’t stay. The majority of stuff was tossed.
We tried to think of every mother we know. The ones that claim they don’t want anything but know that’s not true. The ones who would rather receive one thoughtful gift than three disappointing ones. The ones who have expensive tastes and probably already bought themselves anything you’d think of. The ones who take care of everyone and everything else that they rarely buy themselves a gift. And that’s usually the best indicator for what they’d actually love to receive. What’s here we wouldn’t hesitate to give to our own mothers. Not a careless statement to wrap up our ethos, that was literally our bar for every decision. If something didn’t meet that standard, it’s not here. Hopefully, your mum will love whatever you pick from here because some people deserve you to actually get it right.
