1st Birthday
Nobody at a first birthday party is buying a gift for the one year old. That sounds harsh but it's true, and once you accept it the whole thing gets a lot easier. The baby will eat the wrapping paper and fall asleep. The people who matter here are the parents, who have kept a small human alive for an entire year and are mostly running on cold coffee and something close to disbelief that they made it this far.
So we thought hard about what actually earns its place at this particular occasion. Not the cheap plastic that gets stepped on at midnight. Not the fifth stuffed animal that looks identical to the other four already on the shelf. We wanted things that mean something, whether that's a keepsake the family will genuinely hold onto, a toy that grows with the child past this first year, or something that quietly acknowledges the parents and what they've been through to get here.
We also thought about the people buying these gifts, because a first birthday draws in grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends without children who aren't quite sure what's appropriate and end up panic buying something enormous and impractical. We've tried to make this easy for all of them. Every pick here is something we'd be comfortable handing over ourselves, at the party, in front of everyone.
The best first birthday gifts tend to do one of three things well. They last, they photograph beautifully in a way that means something to the parents rather than just looking good in a grid, or they solve a real and current problem that the parents haven't had time to solve themselves. Ideally all three at once, which is a high bar but the right one to set.
We've kept this collection tight on purpose. A first birthday is a big moment dressed up as a small one, and it deserves more care than scrolling through five hundred options and picking something that felt fine. These are the gifts that felt better than fine. The ones we picked and then didn't second guess.
