80th Birthday
Eighty years isn’t an inconsequential amount of time and a gift for someone who’s reached eighty shouldn’t be an afterthought. This birthday is the one where a quick pat-on-the-back simply won’t do. A nice but ultimately forgettable present won’t cut it when you’re celebrating someone who’s actually made it to eight-zero. Sure, that made shopping for this list harder than it sounds, because so much stuff marketed toward big birthdays is really just standard gift-giving draped with a big ribbon.
On reflection, we decided to approach this a little differently. We thought about what it means to turn eighty. It means reaching an age where you already have stuff, where you’ve lived a full life, and where you certainly don’t need more clutter just because someone stuck a candle on top. What you do deserve at eighty is something that recognizes the occasion. That could be a gift that draws on memory and lasts beyond the celebration. It could be an experience that proves life is still being lived at eighty. It could be simply a thing, beautifully made, that you’d never buy yourself but that tells everyone else that the honouree knows just how big a deal today is.
We didn’t choose these gifts because they’re pricey or because they photograph well. We chose them because they pass the simplest of tests; does this honour the person on the day or does it distract from it? We saw plenty that did the former. Too many things we looked at were birthday shaped, but not meaning shaped. It’s a real gap.
That’s why we’ve kept this list short on purpose. We’d rather give you ten worthy options than forty that’ll do-and-fifty that feel very much like every other gift-worthy occasion. Some of these suggestions are things you’d spruce up with a personal touch. Some stand alone. None of them were chosen unless we felt like eighty years is deserving of better than gifts you could give for any random milestone.
Eighty years is a proper milestone. It deserves a proper gift.
