New Year
January has an odd feeling about it. The festivities have died down, the tree has been tucked away and there’s suddenly a silence where there used to be so much noise. For some, that silence is welcome. But for others, it leaves a void that should be filled with something meaningful; something that promises newness, that has a sense of moving forwards. These are the kinds of gifts we were thinking of.
New Year’s Day doesn’t come with the baggage of Christmas morning. Presents are rolled out far less often. And while we think that’s kinda wonderful, we also think that new year gifts matter. Like little banners welcoming someone else into this brand new year with a gift that isn’t because your credit card company told you to spend. Instead, it’s a reason to look forward.
We put a lot of thought into selecting stuff that actually feels right for this time of year. There’s no gimmicky jumpers or stupid hats in here. We wanted gifts that whisper about the year to come; that are understatedly excellent. Things that aren’t hurried, but feel like a beginning.
Some of our picks are purely for pleasure. January is constipated with sobriety and self-righteous goodness so sometimes what you need is a gift that lets you make cow noises or champagne for breakfast. Others are more about new beginnings. Subtle ones. But a few of these things would make wonderful gifts for ourselves.
Then there’s the person to consider. Maybe it’s your friend who spent December wondering when everyone else lost their festive spirit. Or perhaps it’s for the person who has a massive year coming up and deserves a gift that understands that without banging on about it. Or the friend who is building something new and might welcome a little push.
This list is small. Curated with care. These are the things we loved and chose because they felt right for this moment above anything else.
