Meet the type of person who runs hot. Not always temperamentally – although they kind of do that too – but physically. They want the curry sauce that makes your eyes water from across the room. They are always hunting down the chilli oil the restaurant keeps tucked away behind the counter. When a dish doesn’t make them sweat they consider it to be somehow underwhelming. They would rather live on the edge a little bit at the dinner table than not feel anything at all. If that’s you, this is the gift collection for you.
Assembled because gifting to someone who loves heat is surprisingly difficult. Overlooked bottles nestled away at the back of cupboards everywhere. The easy options – the dusty bottle of Tabasco, the novelty jar of something deemed ‘Death Wish’ – are cynical. Somebody who genuinely loves spice will already have tried all of these. What they want is something curated. Something that recognises their pallet as refined, not just as extreme. Heat as flavour profile, rather than just heat for the sake of it.
With that in mind, we sought out bottles and packages that truly earn their place in a kitchen worth its salt. Chilli condiments with depth of flavour to compliment the burn. Hot sauces that a cook would actually reach for and use, rather than simply loving behind a filter. Savoury snacks that give you warmth without tasting like licking a blowtorch. We considered ingredients, provenance, the makers behind the products and what they were trying to achieve. In the end a lot of stuff was discounted because it was about hype over flavour. What didn’t get thrown out is incredible. Stuff we would gift to another chef ourselves. Stuff that someone who knows about these things would immediately recognise as special.
It also makes for a great gift for anyone who loves food but is otherwise hard to buy for. It allows you to be personal, without having to know what’s in their kitchen. Specific enough to show you’ve put thought into it, but not so niche that you have to spell everything out. That kind of balance is rare. You’re welcome.
