Entertainment
Some people are difficult to shop for until you realise what they spend their time doing. They have game nights that stretch past midnight. They lose themselves in movies as if it were meditation. They’re into vinyl, puzzle games, spending entire weekends marathoning board games. Once you start considering how someone spends their downtime—not what they own, not which room in their house could use more stuff—the answers become a lot clearer.
Entertainment gifts for people who spend their downtime… entertaining.
That’s what this list is founded upon. Giving someone something that enhances the thing they love to do more than anything else. Gifts that get placed front and centre of a bona fide hobby, not lingering in guilt on the periphery.
When putting this list together we were selective for a reason. The industry of entertainment gifts is massive and most of it is just junk. Novelty gadgets that are cute for ten minutes. Generic gift cards to streaming services that suggest you forgot. Anything you can slap a ‘music’ theme onto at Pottery Barn. We skipped past all of that nonsense. Instead we honed in on things that would truly elevate the experience.
Games that will blow away the friends of someone who really hates playing on a laptop. Music boxes for the person who has every piece of vinyl but doesn’t own a great system to play it on. Books for the person who devours novels so fast they’ll have time to start the next one you pick for them. Puzzles, movies, electronics. Gifts for specific people with specific interests.
When done right, a good entertainment centric gift will speak volumes. It lets you know we were paying attention to the things you actually like to do rather than guessing. It becomes a part of someone’s routine, something they use, rather than a decorative placeholder. That’s what separates gifts that will get used weekly and gifts that’ll be thanked for at the time before being promptly forgotten.
We only kept things in this list that passed that test. Would we want it? Will they use this? Is this the best it can be? If we couldn’t confidently say yes we moved on.
