Some fandoms are low commitment. Game of Thrones is emphatically not one of those. Fans of this series care about it, care about it in a way that means they’ll rewatch episodes religiously, have opinions about which house they would have sworn into, and can actually have a conversation about whether the ending was a betrayal or a disappointment. Finding gifts for that kind of person is easy if you know what you’re doing and near impossible if you don’t.
We approached this with our Game of Thrones loving friends in mind. We wanted gifts that celebrated their interest without talking down to it. We eliminated a lot. The obvious stuff. Knick knacks produced on an assembly line with a dragon on it but nothing else going for it. Stuff you see in the checkout line at souvenir shops and buy out of a mixture of guilt and despair. Nope, as soon as it crossed our minds we crossed it off these lists.
The beauty of this collection is that it works for that casual fan too. Somebody who watched it once and enjoyed it. But we had the die-hards in mind through this entire process. We had the friends that come to mind who have a favourite episode they’ll quote at you for hours; will passionately argue their house allegiances; and will probably still have complex feelings about Ned Stark that they’ve never really moved on from. These are the kinds of fans we bought for and these are the standards every single one of these gifts had to achieve.
We considered occasion too, because these gifts do a lot of heavy lifting. A gift like this can work for birthdays or Christmas. It can work for the friend who is doing a marathon rewatch and deserves something worthy of commemorating the feat. Some are for display. Some you’ll actually use. Some you can wear and not feel like you’re wearing a costume. They’re all endlessly better than scrolling through products on some marketplace at midnight.
The world of Westeros is complex. It’s brutal. It’s beautiful. And the fans who fell in love with it deserve gifts as incredible as that series was. These are.
