Cooking
Anyone who cooks properly is one of the simplest people in the world to buy gifts for…in theory. When it comes down to it this is where most gift guides steer you wrong. Either you end up with a piece of kit that lives on your worktop for the first week of January before becoming relegated to a drawer until February, or you panic and buy something so cumbersome they own 3 already. We’ve received both gifts and never once hadeitherfeel good about receiving.
What we wanted instead was items that actually improve how someone cooks.Prepared ingredientsantor instruments that aren’t novelty, aren’t theater, and won’t end up dragged out once to show off to guests before being shoved to the back of a cupboard. Items that earn their space on a worktop or in a kit because they do their job better than everything else. If we’re honest with ourselves that’s a much shorter list than most gift guides will have you believe.
The cooks we kept in mind when compiling this list take pride in doing their job right. Not everyone is a professional or obsessed with cooking techniques and ratios, but they do care about what they’re cooking. They taste as they go, they have opinions about knives, they know a good pan when they see one and more importantly they know why it matters. These aren’t the people you gift something ‘pretty’ too.
We wanted this list to work for different types of cooks because that’s what it needs to if it’s going to work for you. The serious baker needs something on here different to the person cooking dinner from scratch each night. And both those people need something different to gift the person who doesn’t cook much but has recently started getting into it and actually wants to learn how. If we’ve done our jobs right you’ll be able to cover all those people without inflating this list to make it seem bigger than it is.
All of the products mentioned we’ve spent proper time thinking about. Some of them are things we use and love in our own kitchens. Some were recommended to us by people who know how to cook and we trust their opinion with food completely. None of them ended up on this list because they looked good in a line up or had cute packaging. Let’s be real here thateliminates a lot.
Gift like this for the person who takes food seriously. End of story.
