Dad
Buying for Dad is one of the more quietly challenging pursuits when it comes to gift-giving. It’s not that he’s hard to love, or that he’s hard to buy for. It’s that he’s spent thirty years telling you that he doesn’t need anything and believing it, at least partially. He has stuff. Good stuff that he bought himself, probably many years ago, and that he has no immediate intention of replacing. What this means is that the most natural strategy of wandering around until you bump into something vaguely appropriate is also the strategy most likely to result in something that gets thanked warmly but never used.
This was our attempt to knock down that wall. Less focused on what Dad gifts look like, and more focused on what would legitimately make him stop and look twice. The gifts where he picks it up, feels how well it’s made and asks you where you found it. Those kind of reactions don’t come along that often. They’re the ones we’re going for when we put this together.
Novelty slop pretending to be carefully curated isn’t going to get us there. Funny socks, mugs with quotes on them, key rings. Stuff that lets you signal you put effort in without actually proving you did. It’s already everywhere and it doesn’t need us bombarding it with more crap its advertised at. No, we’re trying to help the truly thoughtful gift-finder here. We’re trying to solve the problem of that perfect gift that really lands; that proves you’re actually paying attention to the man he is rather than just that he’s your dad.
So we did some looking of our own. Searched for the real deal. Gifts that have some actual thought behind them. Items so well built that he’ll be using them ten years from now; when that’s a reasonable expectation for any purchase let alone a gift. Whether he spends his weekends tearing around the woods on a bike, lying in a tent with a book or some combination of the two, we’ve tried to cover all the ground here.
We kept this list short intentionally. If it’s on here, it’s something we’d buy for our own fathers without reservation. Not because they’re hefty or expensive gifts necessarily. Because they’re right. That’s the only criteria we cared about.
