Get Well Soon
Being ill sucks. OK fine, it sucks physically too but you know what I mean. It’s the boredom, the smallness of life when you’re trapped in bed or holed up on the couch. It’s the low-grade guilt that everyone else is patiently waiting for you to snap out of it but clearly isn’t. A good get well gift recognises all of those things. A bad get well gift ignores them completely.
We noticed most get well gifts fall into one of two categories. Neither of them really hit the mark. There’s the fruit basket; well intentioned but quickly forgotten. Or there’s novelty crap, the toilet roll with a joke printed on it, the bath bomb set that came as part of a three pack. Neither of those things tell the person you’re caring for what you really want to say. Which is, I see you, I’m thinking of you and I want you to feel taken care of; not just visited.
We looked at hundreds of potential products for this collection. And each one was eliminated if they didn’t pass our goober-simple test; Would this cheer someone up about their day? Instead of focussing on their illness. That’s actually quite different. And surprisingly important.
We were searching for stuff that made us feel better about being horizontal, that gave someone something to look forward to during their day and that felt considered. Not just grabbed from the nearest newsagents.
Some of the stuff we’ve picked is pleasantly practical. Some of it doubles up as comfort in the way that only good food and good company can. A few of the treats we’ve included are things people wouldn’t normally buy themselves. And that’s why they make such amazing get well gifts.
When you’re putting together a recovery kit like this, timing is everything too. Some things here are great for day 1-7. When everything hurts and you just want to sleep. Others are better if someone is taking a longer road to recovery; You know, the kind that everyone else has pretty much moved on from but they still aren’t 100%. Picking something that matches how the patient is feeling right now takes a little consideration. We’ve done the hard work for you.
