Forty years is a long time to commit to anything. Most of us spend more time at work than anywhere else so when that comes to an end it deserves a celebration better than a card and something from the office pick ‘n’ mix. We built Condor&Dove because we kept coming across retirements and feeling like there was no gift out there that got it right. Too many wind up toys that feel like a slightly painful way to say “Now you’re old.” Or photoshoots that assume someone’s only plan is to walk around their garden slowly repeating the years behind them. Our friends and family deserve better than that. They’ve earned something that means something. We didn’t want fishing novelty mugs. And we didn’t want machines putting someone’s name on a clock that’ll hang above a million other retirees this year. We started looking for gifts that felt as significant as the occasion without taking themselves too seriously. Treating retirement like the beginning of something rather than just the end of your working life. We also thought hard about who retirement is for these days, because it’s not all one demographic. It’s the friends who can’t wait to travel, the ones who’ve got a project lined up already and the ones who’ll happily just chill for a while and be really present. So we looked for gifts that’ll work for all of the above, not gifts that make assumptions. Everything you see here we picked by hand. We only asked one question. Does this feel like someone who’s spent decades caring for others, building something from nothing or getting up at 4am every day will actually want to display in their home? If the answer was no, it didn’t make the cut. That rule eliminated a lot of gift ideas. That’s why you won’t find endless lists here. A carefully curated handful of gifts is better than scrolling through pages of stuff that all sort of blur together. Speaking of blurring together.
