Golf
On paper, golfers are some of the easiest people in the world to buy gifts for. Get down to it, however, and it becomes one of the hardest. Golfers that play enough have everything they need. Golfers that don’t play enough don’t want to be reminded that they still can’t break ninety. The tired generic golf gift, the novelty ball marker that comes with a tiny umbrella, the box full of branded tees, the mug adorned with a golfer mid-swing – these gifts gather dust in drawers or get regifted immediately. We’ve bought them before too. We know what we’re talking about here.
So when we set out to compile this list, we treated it as if we were buying for someone we actually golf with. Someone we’ve seen play, whose gear complaints we are familiar with, who would know the difference between something we put thought into picking out and something we stopped to examine at a golf pro shop. Each and every one of these things had to pass muster.
The ones that did can safely be divided into a few categories. Life-changing gear (but seriously life-changing, and not in a buzz-gum kind of way), things that will be used outside of golf, and the curated high-end picks because we all know golfers love crap that costs more than it probably should.
We could have tried to encompass every handicap and every price point with hundreds of items. But we didn’t. This isn’t that. Instead, these are some tried and tested, honestly chosen items that we wouldn’t mind giving (or receiving) as gifts because they would hold up if we received them and someone other than the person who wrapped them saw them. Some are practical, some purely indulgent. But there’s no filler here.
Golf is a sport you fall in love with gradually, and then all at once. Golfers spend way too much time thinking about it. When you find a gift that understands that level of obsession rather than just patting it on the head, you’ve found something special. That’s what we tried to curate here. We think we succeeded.
