Boston Celtics
We don’t need to try to sell you on being a Celtics fan. You already know every championship banner, every retired number hanging from the Garden rafters, every reason why green and white means something different to you than any other colour combination in professional sport.
Buying for that person should be easy. Rarely is it.
The problem is that there’s just so much stuff. Poor quality replica kit that fades after two washes. Blank white mugs with the logo slapped on like an afterthought. Keyrings that will never even see a key; they’ll end up in a drawer before the week is out. We have no interest in sending you any of that, and we assume you don’t either; which is why this collection is as small as it is.
Instead we went looking for things we believe a real Celtics fan will actually want, rather than just tolerate. We thought about the fan who has watched every playoff run since the Bird era, and the one who came to the team in the Garnett and Pierce years; and the younger fans who are living through a Celtics team right now who are in the middle of another golden period of basketball. The right gift transcends all of that. It connects to the history without being some stale museum piece, but it’s also something that fits into somebody’s day to day life rather than just marking the occasion.
Speaking of…
We thought about the occasions too. The Celtics fan in your life who has a birthday coming up. Your hometown buddies who you’re visiting for the game and have a Celtics flag in the window but nothing on their wishlist. The colleague who you can’t shut up about the Celtics and all deserves something better than a card and a bottle of wine.
What made the cut is stuff we’d hand over ourselves with no hesitation. Gifts that don’t feel like a panicked last minute choice from a sports merch site. Stuff you’ll be proud to give, that they’ll be proud to receive; and that will still feel right in five years time. We kept asking ourselves one question throughout the entire process;
If we gifted this to a genuine Celtics fan would they appreciate it? Or would they smile politely, guiltily dump it on a shelf and never look at it again?
Only stuff we’d appreciate ended up in the first category.
