We know there’s a fan out there who doesn’t want just some random merch with a logo on it. Cav fans have earned that right more than most. This is a fanbase that endured the downtimes, lost their best player and got him back only to watch him do something in 2016 that no Cleveland sportsperson had accomplished in 53 years. You don’t stick by a team through all that nonsense just so you can dunk a logo mug in your motorway service station coffee.
So when we sat down to compile this list, we kept that fan in mind. The one who replays the game. The one who will re-watch the block, the chase down, the Finals win in Game 7 like it was last week. The one who wants a gift that means something more than something that just so happens to be wine coloured.
We selected some things for different occasions. There’s the birthday or Christmas where you know somebody well enough that you know Cavs stuff will mean something to them and you want to reflect that in a gift. But we also selected some stuff for the one who buys for themselves. You know who you are and its completely acceptable. We’re not here to pretend that doesn’t happen. A nice piece of Cavs swag isn’t an impulse buy. It’s investing in the things you actually care about.
What we tried to do was weed through the junk to find quality products that put some thought into the designs. Things that look as nice IRL as they do on a product photo. Clothing that fits instead of hanging off of someone like it did Elvis’. Items that have some sense of history behind it because this franchise has history worth tying into. We didn’t want everything on here. We’re not interested in feeding into the lowest common denominator version of fan gear. It already exists and does nobody any good.
The Cavs mean something in this city. Wine and gold runs deep. They’ve given their fans memories that teams in cities with far richer sports legacies will never understand. We tried to find gifts that were worthy of that. Not garbage that’s flashy or cheap or a bunch of filler with a logo plastered on it. Things we thought real Cavs fans would love.
