Washington Commanders
Burgundy and gold runs through their veins. They’re not fairweather fans who show up bright and loud on game day and disappear when the going gets tough. They’re the ones who grew up with their team at the kitchen table; wore jerseys so old the colors don’t quite match anymore; and have debated opponents until their voices gave out in FedExField parking lots across two generations. Shopping for them isn’t hard if you know what you’re doing. The hard part is that most gift guides don’t know what they’re doing. They bulk out their lists with “Team Awesome Stadium” prints and logo water bottles that would feel right at home on any sideline if you swapped the colour palette. We didn’t want to do that.
We only included things we think a true Commanders fan would want to curl up and live with. Not your casual NFL fan. We mean the ones who remember Sean Taylor; who lived through the rebuild with a resigned hope that only loyalists cherish; and who want the friends and family in their lives to understand their fandom is serious because it always has been. They deserve more than swag.
We also considered timing. Mid-season birthdays. Christmas when you just need to get it right for the lone Commanders fan in the family who otherwise roots for whoever. That new apartment across the country and needing something unique to hang on the wall that says “THIS IS WHO I AM” before they’ve even hung their dishes. Whenever we couldn’t decide if something should make the cut, we thought about who would be buying in these moments and what they would want.
We didn’t compromise on items because they were easy to find or made for cheap under some corporate licensing deal. We asked ourselves if fans would want it. If it would work as a gift from afar. If it would hold weight when it landed in someone’s home and get used instead of politely thanked then forgotten at the bottom of a drawer. It’s a high bar. A lot of great gifts didn’t make the cut because of it.
But also, there’s a reason it’s a high bar. Because what we’ve been left with is a gift list we’d shop for ourselves if we loved the team like these people do. And around here? Yeah, we got a few of those types in our lives.
